"Jacob" - portrait drawing from life

Nothing more interesting or challenging than drawing from life.  I've participated in life drawing groups  for many, many years and I never tire of them.  A lot of this piece was done using the side of my oil pastels which contributes to a looser drawing - and I'm so pleased with how this portrait turned out - my approach was to begin with shape and when nearly complete, I added a bit of line.  It was fun doing a drawing this way - maybe it's my new method.  Painted with Caran d'Ache and Sennelier oil pastels on 5 x 7" Pastelbord.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Flamenco #17 - original oil pastel drawing

Here's a quick drawing that I loved doing on 12 x 9" Strathmore mixed media toned blue paper, using Sennelier oil pastels.  Nothing like the movements of dancers and the fun of my attempts to capture them!  Of course there's a lot of memory drawing whether dancers or bull riders or athletes because the "pose" is quickly and constantly changing.  I'm such a believer in life drawing whether it's long poses or gestures  and I do it every chance I get.

"Nude with Earrings" - original oil pastel painting of a nude

I've always loved back views because they are mysterious and actually very challenging.  I worked here to get the values correct.  And just to be completely true to myself, I didn't add color to her left leg.  Drawing - my true love!  Using Sennelier oil pastels, I painted this piece on 12 x 9" Colourfix paper.  Thanks so much for looking!

"Black Dress" - oil pastel drawing of the model

I loved drawing this model - there's nothing like drawing from life!  I used a sketchy scribbling with my oil pastel to (I hope) capture her pose and, yes, could have "finished" it more, but then it wouldn't have been as much fun.  About 9 x 9" on Colourfix paper.  Thanks for visiting Hackberry Street Studio!

Nude on Blue-Grey Paper - charcoal life drawing with touches of white charcoal

For this nude drawing, I used vine and willow charcoal with bits of General's white charcoal - my fave - on some blue-grey Canson paper.  This one is about 9 x 10".  Thanks for stopping by.

A Colorful Little Nude - watercolor nude

This quickly done little nude was painted with Inktense sticks that I washed over with a water brush        

pen, just perfect for life drawing groups - no messy water containers to worry with.  And of course, I see all the things I could have labored over, but didn't have the time - a blessing for me, really, since I tend to kill drawings with overworking.  This piece is about 11 x 5".  Thanks for looking!

I did this one on Strathmore toned tan paper - and I enjoyed working on this warm colored surface.  Not real toothy, but it was perfect with the compressed pastel sticks from General Pencil Co - in this case, black, white, sanguine and sepia.  I am always so happy to find art media made in this country.  General Pencil is not just an American company, but I really enjoy working with their products - and I LOVE their Primo Euro Blend charcoal pencils and sticks - they remind me of the Ritmo pencils of years ago.  Thanks for stopping by!

 I always love standing poses.  This one was done months ago at a drawing group and everything I'm working on at the moment is nowhere near being finished - can't even be a 'work in progress'.  It's very handy to have lots of drawings around for times like this.  This one is about 14 x 8" - thanks for looking!

Two Nudes - original charcoal nude drawing

Here are two more nudes from the latest drawing session.  Done on Strathmore drawing paper, about 14 x 9".  I drew while listening to "music" that sounded like pots and pans banging around.  I am not kidding - but it was a mostly youngish group and since I was the newcomer, I couldn't say anything.  Thanks for stopping by!

This is a drawing I dug out from a few months ago.  It's about 12 x 8 1/2", done in vine charcoal on Bristol paper.  I love the way charcoal behaves on Bristol board - the way it copes with that slick surface.  Thanks for stopping by.

Nude in a Yellow Chair - original oil pastel nude painting

This oil pastel is painted on 12 x 9" Guerilla carton board.  Wonderful stuff.  I just ordered some Caran d'Ache oil pastels because I think they will work really well on this surface.  I was going to do something with the background, but didn't have time, and didn't really get much of a finish on the model, either, but maybe next time.  Thanks for looking!

Using carton board, I started this drawing with Crayolas, but decided I needed a little more 'oomph', so went for my wonderful Sennelier oil pastels.  They never disappoint.  It's on 12 x 9" carton, but I cropped it - in the photo only - to about 11 x 5".  Thanks for stopping by!

Nude in Mixed Media - original mixed media drawing of a nude

This is a drawing that I did from life several months ago and just forgot about.  I came across it today while I was going through and (I hope) organizing some of my things.  (This project is endless, I tell you.)  The gestural lines were drawn on Yupo, using wax crayons (Caran d'Ache Neocolor I).  I added a little watercolor - which, of course, doesn't adhere to the wax lines, then applied touches of watercolor crayons (I LOVE those things!) and just generally had a great time.  It's about 12 x 9".  Thanks for visiting my blog!

The Model in Mixed Media - original nude mixed media painting

This drawing is done with graphite, watercolor and Daniel Smith watercolor sticks.  The pose was a quick one and instead of "correcting" anything on the piece, I just let it alone.  It's 12 x 9" on Yupo paper.  Thanks so much for looking! Sold

This is another life drawing from my stash of nudes - Josie was the model for this one, which is drawn with vine charcoal on 11 x 14" Strathmore drawing paper.  I plan to do a painting based on the drawing.

Another Nude on Green - original oil pastel nude painting

Another favorite art pastime - nudes drawn quickly and without much thinking and analyzing.  I LOVE painting this way - it just makes my heart sing!  A dab of color here, a line there - it probably sounds haphazard and, of course, not everything turns out the way I'd like - but

Three Figures Dancing - original charcoal drawing of nudes

Here's a quickly drawn group of nudes with lots of restating.  I'm a big fan of that and when I teach figure drawing classes, I have students put away their erasers.  Kind of messy, but I find it instructive, although I do make a few passes with a kneaded eraser.  This is drawn with vine charcoal on Strathmore 400 Drawing paper, 11 x 14".  Thanks for stopping by!

Evening Nude - original charcoal drawing of a nude model

This nude, which I drew in a 20 minute pose over a failed drawing and which I chose not to really "finish" was done in an evening life drawing group.  Those groups are getting harder to find, so I'm thrilled when I can drop in at one of them.  As for working over a drawing that didn't make the cut, I think that it sometimes lends a certain charm to an artwork.  I had a painting teacher once who said that you should leave a little of your previous stroke when you make a change to your work - just to show what you had been thinking earlier.  Maybe this isn't exactly what she had in mind (a new drawing over the erasure of an old one) but close, I think.  It's done on 14 x 11" Strathmore 400 drawing paper, using vine charcoal and General's charcoal pencils.  If you would like to contact me about this drawing, please click the "Contact Me" button to the right of this post.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Another Standing Pose - original charcoal nude drawing

Standing poses are my favorite, especially back poses.  There's a little mystery when her face isn't showing.  This drawing is one I did a few weeks ago, but it's posted today, because I'm working on lots of beach paintings.  This past week I was in La Jolla, CA, where I went to the beach and drew people.  It was heaven for a people-watcher like me!   This drawing is 15 x 8".  Thanks for visiting my blog!
